Host Families Sought for One-Month Exchange

Bring the world into your home this summer by hosting a Japanese student! These young people are excited to learn about your family’s customs and culture, your values, foods, clothes, and lifestyle. But mostly they want to make friends, meet other young people, and try communicating in English!

The dates of the exchange are July 26 through August 22. The program is open to any family with a youth of the same age and gender as the Japanese youths. There will be 55 Japanese youths, boys and girls, traveling to Michigan and they range in age from 12 to 15. They have been studying English and are eager to try using it, so there is no need to know Japanese. Families will attend an orientation in early summer if selected as a host family for this year. Opportunities also exist for youths to travel to Japan and spend a month with their new friend the following year.

The 4-H/Japanese Exchange program is one of the largest exchange programs involving North American and Japanese youth in the world. Since 1972 over 25,000 students have stayed with families in North America, and more than 4,000 American students have made reciprocal visits to Japan. This summer, take the opportunity to open your hearts and homes to an exchange student and allow your entire family to enjoy a new experience they are sure to never forget!

For more information or to obtain a host family application, contact your county MSU Extension office or Vera Wiltse at 989-772-0911 extension 302 or wiltsev@msu.edu

With that in mind; NO OPEN FLAMES, no outside props, no outside food/drink; will not be allowed at thetheatre. 17 and up can get in to see the movie. Anyone younger than 17 can get in with parent or guardian who is 17 or older. IDs will be checked at the door, so please bring them if you want to get in.

We met our goal for the last Rocky and would like to bring in more people for the experience. So, if you have never seen the show, this is the one to go to. And if you have already seen our show, you know why you need to see it again!! So, spread the word and come do the Time Warp with us again!! If you saw our last show, Virgin games returns for another engagement this show. So, bring a Rocky irgin; they will leave wanting more.

P.S. PAINTED PERVERSION MERCHANDISE NOW FOR SALE!!!! T-shirts and panties with Painted Perversion very own logo; so that you may proudly display that you were "Painted" by the "Perversion". CALL TO ACTION!!!

In an open letter from Neeta Delaney, President/CEO- ArtServe Michigan...

Last Thursday, as part of ArtServe's advocacy work on your behalf, I testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on History, Arts and Libraries, to recommend FY 2009 funding of $14 million for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. This is part of a long-term funding strategy for an incremental restoration of this funding to the 2002 level of $27 million over the same period of time it took to cut it to the current level of $7.7 million. Joining me was David Frey, chairman of the Frey Foundation, and Eileen Weiser, former MCACA council member and former Michigan Department of Education State Board of Education member. All three of us testified about the importance of the arts, culture, and arts education to our state's ability to not only survive these economically and socially challenging times, but to thrive in the future.

While our messages were well received by the committee, we're now at the part of the budgeting process where we absolutely must have your help! Without your voices, our messages will carry little weight. Please take the time to e-mail or call the members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on HAL listed below. Let them know that you value and support arts and culture in Michigan, and ask them to support funding for the MCACA at $14 million for FY2009. For your convenience, we suggest you go directly to the advocacy section of ArtServe's Web site ( www.artservemichigan.org/advocacy), and click on Arts & Culture Advocacy Toolkit.

Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on HAL:

Tom George (Chair), sentgeorge@senate.michigan.gov, 517-373-0793

Cameron Brown, sencbrown@senate.michigan.gov, 517-373-5932

Irma Clark-Coleman, seniclark-coleman@senate.michigan.gov, 517-373-0990

There are only a few days left until the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee arrives at its funding recommendation, so your communications are critically important. If possible, please blind copy (BCC) ArtServe's Director of Advocacy, Mike Latvis, at mike@artservemichigan.org so we can track the number of communications sent. We're counting on you!!!

When you meet people for the first time, you see the surface, but what lies beneath that?
What do they want you to see immediately, and what is more slowly revealed?

Ken Campbell's new photography show invites the viewer to ask these questions.

The portrait work in the show uses fabrics, masks, and movement to form different layers in front of the subjects, all combining in different "surfaces", and printed on canvas to add another texture.

The nature pictures in the show are long exposures of water and reflections, again showing a surface that the viewer can dive into - so, what lies beneath the surface?

Governor’s Residence Artist’s Program - Call for Artists

The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art of the Midland Center for the Arts is working in conjunction with Governor’s Residence Artist’s Program to assist the Governor in putting together a body of artwork for the Governor’s Residence.

The Museum is doing so by coordinating a juried invitational exhibition. Artists can submit up to 4 works for consideration and inclusion in the project.

To have your work considered, you should submit digital images of the works that you would consider putting on loan and exhibition at the Governor’s residence. Selected works would be on exhibit in the Governor’s residence from August 2008 through July of 2009 and cannot be withdrawn from the exhibition until it is completed in 2009.

The submitted works would go through a three-phase jury process to be included in the final exhibition. The first jury will be conducted by a team of jurors at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art. The works selected would be organized in a PowerPoint presentation for the Residence Selection Committee to make a second selection. After this, the selected works will be delivered to the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art where the staff of the museum will load and transport the works to the Governor’s residence where the third and final selection of works would be completed by the First Family. The Museum Director and Preparator would personally install the works in the residence.

Deadline for submission of slides or digital images of works for the first jury are due May 23, 2008 at the Alden B Dow Museum of Science and Art, 1801 West St. Andrews, Midland, MI 48640. The Residence Selection Committee will do the second jury on June 30th. The selected works will then be delivered to the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art, July 14 -18 from 10 am – 4pm. The First Family will make their final selections July 28th and the works will be installed July 28 and 29, 2008.
