CALL TO ACTION!!!In an open letter from Neeta Delaney, President/CEO- ArtServe Michigan... Last Thursday, as part of ArtServe's advocacy work on your behalf, I testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on History, Arts and Libraries, to recommend FY 2009 funding of $14 million for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. This is part of a long-term funding strategy for an incremental restoration of this funding to the 2002 level of $27 million over the same period of time it took to cut it to the current level of $7.7 million. Joining me was David Frey, chairman of the Frey Foundation, and Eileen Weiser, former MCACA council member and former Michigan Department of Education State Board of Education member. All three of us testified about the importance of the arts, culture, and arts education to our state's ability to not only survive these economically and socially challenging times, but to thrive in the future.
While our messages were well received by the committee, we're now at the part of the budgeting process where we absolutely must have your help! Without your voices, our messages will carry little weight. Please take the time to e-mail or call the members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on HAL listed below. Let them know that you value and support arts and culture in Michigan, and ask them to support funding for the MCACA at $14 million for FY2009. For your convenience, we suggest you go directly to the advocacy section of ArtServe's Web site ( www.artservemichigan.org/advocacy), and click on Arts & Culture Advocacy Toolkit. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on HAL: Tom George (Chair), sentgeorge@senate.michigan.gov, 517-373-0793 Cameron Brown, sencbrown@senate.michigan.gov, 517-373-5932 Irma Clark-Coleman, seniclark-coleman@senate.michigan.gov, 517-373-0990 There are only a few days left until the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee arrives at its funding recommendation, so your communications are critically important. If possible, please blind copy (BCC) ArtServe's Director of Advocacy, Mike Latvis, at mike@artservemichigan.org so we can track the number of communications sent. We're counting on you!!! |

Governor’s Residence Artist’s Program - Call for Artists The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art of the Midland Center for the Arts is working in conjunction with Governor’s Residence Artist’s Program to assist the Governor in putting together a body of artwork for the Governor’s Residence. The Museum is doing so by coordinating a juried invitational exhibition. Artists can submit up to 4 works for consideration and inclusion in the project. To have your work considered, you should submit digital images of the works that you would consider putting on loan and exhibition at the Governor’s residence. Selected works would be on exhibit in the Governor’s residence from August 2008 through July of 2009 and cannot be withdrawn from the exhibition until it is completed in 2009. The submitted works would go through a three-phase jury process to be included in the final exhibition. The first jury will be conducted by a team of jurors at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art. The works selected would be organized in a PowerPoint presentation for the Residence Selection Committee to make a second selection. After this, the selected works will be delivered to the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art where the staff of the museum will load and transport the works to the Governor’s residence where the third and final selection of works would be completed by the First Family. The Museum Director and Preparator would personally install the works in the residence. Deadline for submission of slides or digital images of works for the first jury are due May 23, 2008 at the Alden B Dow Museum of Science and Art, 1801 West St. Andrews, Midland, MI 48640.
