SummerArts Programs and Day Camps at Jackson School of the Arts

June 16-20
Afternoon Session II Time: 1-4 PM
International Art Traveler (rising 3rd-6th graders) Marty Frew Pack your bags and explore exotic and far off lands as you experiment with drawing, painting, printing, fibers and mixed media.

June 23-27
Morning Session I Time: 9–12 Noon
Photography (rising 6th graders & up) Beth Sprang Study the work of famous photographers like David Hockney, Sandy Skoglund and Alfred Eisenstaedt and create your own images in their style. Experiment with various creative processes to develop your own unique style. Bring your point and shoot digital camera.
Afternoon Session II Time: 1-4 PM
Art Explosion!!!
(rising 1st– 3rd graders) Marty Frew Try it all: drawing, painting, sketching, and sculpture. You’ll be amazed at what you can do! Students will work in the art studio and outside.

Afternoon Session II Time: 1-4 PM All About Theater
(rising 6th - 9th graders) Diego Febres-Cordero Each day students will learn about acting on stage with theater games, improv and by working on a short play. They will also learn technical aspects like stage make-up and set design. This workshop will stretch your imagination.

July 14-18
Morning Session I Time: 9-12 Noon
Storybook Art
(rising 3rd-5th graders) Beth Sprang Learn the illustration techniques and do art projects based on some of your favorite children’s book authors from David Kirk (Miss Spider) to Dr. Seuss. Develop your own story and illustrations to create your own picture book.

Afternoon Session II Time: 1-4 PM Sleeping Beauty & Swan Lake Dance & Art Camp (rising 2nd-5th graders) Ginger McNetton/ Marty Frew
For your young dancer/artist. Each day will incorporate dance and theme related art activities. On Friday parents are invited to observe children in a “mini performance.” No dance experience necessary.

July 21-25
Morning Session I Time 9-12 noon Extreme Art & Dance Camp (rising 6th-9th graders) Lindsay Farrell/TBD
Dance for some hip hop style fun (and exercise) and do many different cool art projects like splatter paint and graffiti art. No dance experience needed. Afternoon Session II Time 1-4 PM

Theater Workshop 101
(rising 3rd-5th graders) Diego Febres-Cordero Act. Play. Learn about life on stage and what happens behind the curtain. A fun week full of imaginative play and theatrics.
Sample day for dance/art combination camps: 45 min. dance, 15 min. break, 1 hr. 30 min. art project, 30 min. dance/activity.

Tuesday Evenings with the Arts
Cartooning 5:30–6:30 PM June 10, 17, 24, July 1 (rising 4th graders & up) Brian Ritson
Learn about cartoon art from Japanese anime to graphic novels. Students will work at their own level. Fee: $35 includes all materials.
Art Journals: For artists, writers, neither or both!
6:30-7:45 PM June 10, 17, 24, July 1 (rising 5th graders & up) Mary Westerlund If you enjoy keeping journals or like to draw and paint, an art journal might be the thing for you! An art journal can be a daily log of your thoughts, a place to write a poem, or simply doodle and dabble in a little of everything. Fee: $48 includes all materials.
Ways to Paint 6-7:15 PM July 8,15, 22, 29
(rising 6th-8th graders) Hector Trujillo There is more than 1 way to paint. Experiment with painting using everything from a paint brush to an air brush! Fee: $48 includes all materials.

Please register in advance to ensure your enrollment.
Courses with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled 48 hours in advance of the first session.
You may register by: phone with credit card 517.784.2389 online jacksonarts.org (with credit card) in person at 634 N. Mechanic St., 2nd Floor 4:30-7:30 PM Monday—Friday through 5/12. Other times, please call first.
There is no registration fee. Full payment is due at registration. Payment may be made by check to the Jackson School of the Arts, money order or credit card. Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made 72 hours prior to the first class will receive a full refund, less a $10 service fee. Cancellations made less than 72 hours prior to the first class will be given a 50% refund. No refunds will be given after the date of the first class.

Jackson School of the Arts is committed to serving students from diverse economic, racial and social backgrounds. Scholarships are entirely needs based and decisions are based on the family’s financial need and the Jackson School of the Arts ability to support a percentage of that need.
