From the Collection: Filling the Gap of the 20th Century First Production Sparton Television, 1948 1948 marked the introduction of the Jackson-made Sparton televisions. The viewing arrangement was novel in that the image was projected from horitzontal face of the picture tube to a mirror that reflected the image to the viewer. This was necessary because early picture tubes were very long and to save space they were placed vertically rather than horizontally in the set. This set was purchased in 1948 by Ron and Esther LeGron of Toledo, Ohio and was in use into the early 1960’s. The donor stated, ”My Grandmother Esther recalls the neighbors all coming over to their house to watch the fights”. This was a common phenomenon across the country as the first family in a neighborhood to own a TV usually invited neighbors in to view the new device. Gift of Kim and Tim Spangler. |
